The Chapel Field

To start the soccer club we had to search for a football ground which was no easy task. The ground was founded when Brian O Connor, Vincent Quirke, Stephen Redmond met with C.J Murphy who kindly sponsored the field to Ballymurn Celtic. The field was just muck and stubble but our hard working chairman Brian O Connor the “Hob” deserves a lot of credit as it was his drive and gift of talking!! that got us our theatre of dreams that is the Chapel Field. Aidan Kehoe kindly sponsored his services of sowing the field. Stephen Cullen and “Fletcher” O Connor ploughed the field. Aidan Kehoe also sponsored the first dressing room and the second one was bought from William O Connor which is now our store with the Credit Union sponsoring the home dressing room. Stephen Redmond sponsored the first pitch marker and Seamus Prendergast sponsoring nets, footballs and corner flags. Hentech and John Hennessy made and sponsored the goal posts and so the chapel field was home to Ballymurn Celtic. The following season our lawnmower was purchased in Cork by Brian O Connor and Michael “Burger” Cummins. Our pitch was first maintained by Peter O Brien. Timmy Cosgrave became our great caretaker who kept our field in great condition for a number of years those of us from Ballymurn Celtic will be always grateful. Our latest and current caretaker is Paul Larrissy who again is doing a great job.
